„FireWatch“ is a terrestrial, digital, remote surveillance system for the early detection of forest and bush fires. It is able to keep larger forested areas under permanent surveillance and to determine the development of smoke within these areas. The ingoing data is displayed and evaluated by means of a connection with a Central Office. Should the source of a fire be detected the operator will send out an alarm. By sending this alarm the relevant fire brigade will in addition receive concrete geographical data regarding the source of the fire, which can be precisely located by means of a cross-bearing. The system is excellently suited for the protection of ecological systems and artificial landscapes and is able to contribute substantially to the protection of the environment.
Up until August 2007 150 systems have been installed in Germany in the following federal states:
- Brandenburg
- Mecklenburg-West Pomerania
- Saxony
- Saxony-Anhalt
In the near future the system will increasingly be introduced in countries abroad (Estonia September 2007).
