The system - lorad – was used for the LUMOS system:
Complete coverage acquisition of data (e.g. traffic data) from a plane requires the employment of several ground stations.
These ground stations (Ground-Radio-Station GRS) receive Data, which is sent from the Air-Radio-Station (ARS) installed in the aircraft which is then transmitted to the central control station by means of radio relay and optical fibre links.
At the same time the narrow-band backward channel is brought about via these connections.
Ideally all 3 GRS will receive the transmitted signal of the ARS (e.g. in the overlapping area of the receiving antennas)

Coverage of an area amounting to 1600km2 was achieved by means of only 3 ground stations.
